Full-time PhD student position at University of Vigo (Spain)

We are looking for candidates for a full-time PhD student position at the University of Vigo (Spain) to research in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). The position will be available under funding for a 3-year project (ED431D 2017/12) by the Galician Regional Government and supervised by Prof. Manuel Vilares Ferro. The main goal of this research is to develop new algorithms and techniques to efficiently exploit Machine Learning (ML) processes in the domain of Natural Language Processing (NLP). This includes but is not limited to sampling techniques, convergence estimate, domain adaptation and overfitting detection.

The University of Vigo ( is a young, vibrant public university located in three different campuses: Vigo, Pontevedra and also Ourense, a charming city in the west of Galicia (Spain) offering high quality of life at an affordable cost of living for European standards. The selected candidate will join a team currently consisting of 3 Full Professors, 3 Associated Professors, 4 PhD students and 2 postdoctoral researchers together, integrated into the COLE research group ( The group joins together researchers from computer science, applied mathematics and linguistics backgrounds interested in computational learning, modeling and NLP.

Job content

The predoctoral researcher will develop research within the domain of ML-based NLP, although it is possible to work in other NLP areas as well. The student will be expected to carry through their research project, write scientific articles and their PhD thesis, attend PhD courses (if necessary) and stay at a foreign research institution for a few months.

Salary and benefits

Net salary level in the range of 13.000€ per year (~1.100'00€ per month). Start date: flexible, during the first half of 2020 but preferably in January. Duration: initially 1 year, extensible until at least September 2021. Further extension beyond that point might be possible, but it depends on the availability of funding at that point. To this regard, the candidates must also attend the calls for predoctoral grants from both the Galician Regional Government and the Spanish Ministry of Education to ensure future funding. Travel money for attending conferences and making research visits to research institutions will be assumed by the research group.

Information for PhD students

The candidates must be preferably enrolled in a Master's Degree Program or have obtained it, preferably in Computing, Mathematics or Linguistics. The goal is to be as soon as possible in a position enabling them to enroll at the doctorate program in Computing at the University of Vigo. Solid programming skills in at least one of C++, Java, C#, or similar. Good level of spoken and written English (it is advisable but not mandatory to have notions of Spanish).

Preferred qualifications (evaluation criteria) for PhD students

The applicant should be motivated and interested in starting a research career in NLP and have good teamwork skills. The applicant's academic record in their bachelor's and master's degree will be assessed with special attention to the subjects related to this call. Apart from the academic record, the candidate should mention any other relevant activities (e.g. courses taken, master's theses, software projects including open source projects in public repositories, work experience, research publications, etc.). The following aspects are not requirements but will be considered favorably in the evaluation: Knowledge in the fields of NLP, ML and deep learning. Knowledge in linguistics or cognitive science. Knowledge of different programming languages. Knowledge of languages other than English or Spanish, with special emphasis on French.
